Reporting from the National Rural Health Association Policy Institute...

March 20th-23rd saw Marion Pawlek, Eric Turer, and Sharleen Moffatt off to Washington D.C. Each year the NRHA holds a policy institute designed to bring people together from all fifty states to bring the rural legislative agenda to legislators face to face.

This year we were able to meet with eleven New England legislative aides on the issues that are foremost in the minds of rural people. Our discussions focused on the impact of the Medicare Reform Part D prescription changes and how the language of this legislation will make it nearly impossible for small locally owned and run independent pharmacies to stay in the business of meeting rural America's needs.

We urged legislators to support the passage of the technical corrections to the bill to remedy this and all unintended consequences of the reform bill. We also discussed the importance of continued funding to the AHECs, Critical Access Hospitals, as well as SHIP and Flex grant dollars.

Overall, legislators wanted the "bottom line" on what the proposed cuts would mean at the local level, and we were there to provide a snapshot of that including the types of programs currently funded by these and other federal dollars state by state.

The Policy Institute also afforded us the opportunity to meet the new Secretary of Health as well as the newly appointed Executive Director of NHRA, Alan Morgan, who we have invited to speak at our annual Symposium in October.
