1st Annual New England Performance Improvement Summit
On April 26th, nearly 100 participants attended the first New England Small Rural Hospital Performance Improvement Summit in Portland, Maine.
The Summit was sponsored by the State Offices of Rural Health in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts in collaboration with the New England Rural Health RoundTable.
The goals of the Summit were to bring a national perspective to Performance Improvement activities, give hospitals who are conducting successful Performance Improvement activities an opportunity to share their experiences, and to provide a networking opportunity for administrators from small rural hospitals.
Andrew Colburn, PhD., Professor and Director at the Institute for Health Policy at the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine, led off the Summit with a presentation on the recent Institute of Medicine report "Quality through Collaboration: The Future of Rural Health." He was followed by Terry Hill, Executive Director of the National Rural
Health Resource Center in Duluth, Minnesota, with a commentary on national trends in rural health care and performance improvement. The program also included presentations from staff at the Alice Peck Day Hospital in Lebanon, New Hampshire, the North Country Health Systems in Newport, Vermont, and Stroudwater Associates in Portland, Maine.
The overall evaluation of the summit was quite favorable, with 95 percent stating that they would attend a similar event in the future. In the words of one exuberant participant, "Thank you very much! You did it, the 1st New England Performance Improvement Summit. Great start, and I look forward to seeing it grow over the years."
Plans are already underway for the 2nd Annual Summit, and we look forward to creating other networking opportunities for small rural hospitals throughout the upcoming year. Summit presentations can be found on the RoundTable's website.
