Mobile Dental Clinic to Serve Kids in NH's North Country

A mobile dentist's office hits the North Country's roads this month to provide care for people who can't afford customary dental visits.

The Molar Express is supported by the North Country Health Consortium (NCHC) and is aimed at providing basic dentistry services, initially to children, in northern Coos and Grafton counties.

Health Kids is the state Medicaid program for children. Twenty-nine percent of children in the North Country are eligible for Health Kids, versus 18% statewide. While area dentists provide Health Kids services, families often have to drive considerable distances for those services.

The first phase of the program will bring the Molar Express to North Country schools where the dental equipment will be taken off the truck and installed temporarily in a classroom or nurse's office.

New from the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services

"Supporting New Hampshire Youth: Moving Toward a Healthier Future" details the state's strategic plan for adolescent health.

The 62-page report documents a comprehensive planning process undertaken by the Maternal & Child Health Section and the UNH Center on Adolescence in order to arrive at a clear understanding of adolescent health needs in NH.

As pointed out in the Introduction, suicide and unintentional injury, substance and tobacco use, and reproductive health are all significant health issues for the state's youth. Socioeconomic, geographic, and increasing ethnic diversities in New Hampshire's population are resulting in divergent adolescent health care needs as well.

The report contains recommendations developed after careful examination of available data and input about our adolescents' needs in the context of national recommendations for ensuring adolescent health, research on adolescents and their development, and commonly accepted theories about effective approaches to working with youth and their families.
